Stay Healthy and Active in the Winter

/ January 14, 2022

It’s easy during the spring, summer, and fall to find time to get outside and exercise. It may be playing at the park, chasing the dog around the yard, or even sports and activities with friends. During the winter months when it is cold and wet, we must get creative to keep that healthy and active lifestyle! Here are some ideas for you and your children to stay active and avoid that cabin fever during the cold winter months:

1. Living room dance party with glow sticks! – These are inexpensive and provide a lot of fun! Clear the living room, turn off the lights, and crank up the music!
2. For younger children, set up an obstacle course – Utilize couches, chairs, pillows, blankets, and your imagination. Get the stopwatch app on your phone to see if they can beat their best time.
3. Play games that require movement – Games like twister, duck duck goose, charades, and Simon says all require movement and are relatively easy to play in the house.
4. Look for other indoor play areas within the community – Bowling, indoor sports like basketball, and even the indoor pool at the NEA Baptist Wellness Center are great places to stay active without fighting the weather.

Whatever activity you choose, make sure you’re staying engaged, and you keep it fun and positive. The American Heart Association recommends 60 minutes of active play a day for children. It doesn’t have to be all at once. Break up the playtime to ensure everyone gets the most out of their time inside!
