Your Summer Skin Care Questions Answered

August 2013

How should I adjust my skin care routine during the summer?

Your skin changes with the seasons so it is very important to change your skincare routine as well. If you currently use a creamy cleanser, then it might be time to switch to a gel or foaming cleanser to really make sure you get all of the dirt, oil, sweat and makeup off of your skin, especially at nighttime. Your skin could also benefit from a mild exfoliant such as Skinceuticals Micro-Exfoliating Scrub a few times a week. Incorporating this step will give your skin a beautiful, healthy glow and it also helps with flawless makeup application. Last but not least, Do not forget your sunscreen! Sunscreen is important year round but especially during the warmer months. It should be your final step in your skin care routine before applying makeup.

What should I look for in a sun screen?

The best sunscreen to look for is one that reads 'Broad Spectrum' on the label and offers UVA/UVB protection. It is also imperative to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher throughout the entire year. If you are fair-skinned and tend to burn easily then you may want to select a higher SPF to be safe. Remember to re-apply often if you plan to be out in the sun for an extended period of time. Also, opt for a 'water resistant' sunscreen if you participate in any outdoor physical activities where you might sweat or come into contact with water.

Besides sunscreen are there any products that you recommend for use during the warm weather months?

Antioxidants are a great addition to sunscreen because they help to neutralize free radical damage which can cause premature aging to your skin by attacking the healthy skin cells. We suggest an antioxidant serum that has Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Ferulic acid, like Skinceuticals CE Ferulic serum. Vitamin E stabilizes the vitamin C and the ferulic acid works as both an antioxidant and a natural sunscreen. Apply your antioxidant serums before your sunscreen on a daily basis to help keep your skin healthy and fresh.

What is the biggest mistake that you see women making when caring for their skin during the summer?

There can be a multitude of mistakes that women make during the summer months pertaining to skincare. One very crucial mistake is not wearing enough sunscreen every day. Just wearing the sunscreen in your makeup is not enough protection. You really need a separate sunscreen before applying makeup. Another mistake often made is not protecting other areas of your body. The neck, chest and hands are some of the most commonly missed areas and are also the first places we start to show age. Try carrying a sunscreen stick or a travel size bottle of your favorite sunscreen in your car or purse for quick and easy touch-ups while on the go.

What is the best way to treat sunburns?

If you start to notice a slight tingling or reddening of the skin, then it is time to get out of the sun ASAP! Sunburns can take anywhere from 4-6 hours to develop so be very cautious at the first sign of noticeable skin changes. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids since burns draw fluid to the surface of the skin and away from the rest of your body. You can apply aloe vera gel in place of moisturizer but don't rub it in like you would moisturizer. Instead, gently pat the aloe vera onto skin. Rubbing too aggressively can be irritating and uncomfortable to the already damaged skin.

When is the best time to remove sun spots and spider veins?

While many people do continue with medical laser skin treatments during the warmer spring and summer months, most desire to do these treatments during the cooler fall and winter months to correct any pigment discoloration that was obtained from sun damage during the summer. As long as there is no suntan (active tan) caused from sunlight or tanning beds or fake tan caused from self tanning creams or spray tans, then laser skin treatments can be done year round.

It is important for patients to realize the importance of adhering to a strict daily sunscreen regimen with the added benefits of great skincare products to achieve longer lasting results. While treatments can help to remove the signs of aging and sun damage, they cannot stop the process of aging. Exceptional results can be maintained with follow up treatments every six months to one year.

Too much sun exposure over the years has caused my skin to age significantly - what are my options?

Laser skin resurfacing works by comfortably removing the top most layers of the skin. Treatment procedures can be performed on a very superficial basis to simply even out skin tone and minor imperfections. Also, treatments can be delivered deeper to re-contour significant wrinkles or scars. Many patients don't even require topical numbing anesthetic cream for the more superficial treatments. However, topical anesthetic cream is used for the more aggressive procedures to numb the skin, allowing for patient comfort and ease.

Many facial conditions such as fine wrinkling around the eyes, mouth and cheeks can be made smoother with ablative laser skin resurfacing. Even the lingering effects of chicken pox and acne scars along with many other surface abnormalities can be successfully treated. Skin tags, sebaceous hyperplasia lesion (clogged oil glands) as well as numerous other benign skin lesions can be removed with this ablative laser procedure without the use of topical anesthetic numbing cream. It is virtually a painless process.

I'm tired of shaving my legs all the time, what options do I have for permanent hair removal?

Laser hair reduction is an excellent treatment choice for permanently reducing unwanted body hair for all skin types and any ethnic background. Laser hair removal treatments work by impairing the growth capacity of hair follicles. Hair grows in three phases and can only be damaged during the active phase of growth. Not all follicles are active at the same time and several treatments every few weeks may be necessary to obtain the desired results. Also, other factors that can affect results are hair color and density, hormone fluctuation and age. Treatments can take 5 to 30 minutes or more, depending on size of treatment area.

Most patients experience approximately a 10% reduction at each laser treatment. Due to the growth cycles of hair follicles being in different phases on different parts of the body, the clinician will set the appropriate amount of weeks between appointments. Most patients achieve considerable and best results after 5-8 treatments.

The unique laser system at NEA Baptist Clinic Advanced Laser Center, is safe for all skin types and can be performed throughout the year. When the entire course of treatments is complete, the majority of treatable hair will be removed. Any remaining hairs after completion of the treatment course are simply the normal fine and vellous hairs which everyone has. Laser hair removal treatments will only work best on darker hair colors. Typically gray, red, blonde or light brown do not respond well to these treatments due to the decreased pigment color in the follicle.
