Medical Oncology

Medical Oncology is the sub-specialty of Internal Medicine involving the diagnosis and treatment of malignancy (cancer). The medical oncologist does not perform surgery but assists with preoperative evaluation, staging (determination of the extent of spread of a cancer), and treatment planning for cancer patients.

An oncologist's skills are necessary in cases requiring special knowledge in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. If chemotherapy (drug treatment for cancer) is needed, it is administered by oral medication or infusion. Learn more about our infusion suites.

Chemotherapy is the term for drugs used to treat cancer. Cancer develops when cells of any type become abnormal through gene mutation or injury, and then keep dividing to form more cells without control or order. Chemotherapy destroys cancer cells by stopping them from multiplying by interfering with their division/growth at one or more points in the life of the cell.
